China has called on the United States to release Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, the Foreign Ministry said on Sunday, January 4.
Reports emerged on Saturday, January 3, that the US had deployed forces to arrest Venezuelan President Maduro and his wife and forcibly took them out of the country.

In an online statement, China expressed grave concern over the US move, describing it as a clear violation of international law, basic norms in international relations, and the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter.

The spokesperson called on Washington to ensure the personal safety of Maduro and his wife and urged that issues be resolved through dialogue and negotiation. China’s reaction comes after reports of Venezuelan President Maduro’s arrest and transfer to the US, where he faces charges related to narco-terrorism and cocaine importation.
The international community is divided, with some countries backing China’s stance and others supporting the US action.
