Harry father’s was a restaurant employee. His father was African-American, wile his mother was Scottish white and Jamaican. He claimed that his grandfather was a white Dutch Jew.
Before enlisting in the Navy and participating in World War II, he attended George Washington High School. He also served as a janitor’s assistant in New York City throughout the 1940s. He fell in love with theatre after seeing the American Negro Theatre. He eventually ran into Sidney Poitier. At the end of the 1940s, he enrolled at The New School’s Dramatic Workshop in New York, & the rest is history.
