The Ghana Supporters Union has confirmed that its members received $400 each, but clarified money wasn’t due to threats to boycott their support for the Black Stars.
Speaking at a press conference in Abidjan on Wednesday morning, Abraham Nkansah, leader of the Ghana Supporters Union, refuted media reports suggesting that the supporters were lured with the amount to prevent a supposed threat of boycotting their support for the Black Stars in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) ahead of their next game against Egypt.

Ghana’s loss to Cape Verde in the first game of the tournament sparked frustration among fans, thus causing criticisms and speculations.
The Ghana Supporters Union emphasized that the funds were not an attempt to dissuade a boycott but a standard allocation.
“It’s about a particular media having it that we the supporters boycotted to show up for Ghana’s game against Egypt, threatening to get back home to Ghana and when we started the threatening, the ministry gave us $400. But that is not true because we have been taken good care of by the ministry in terms of food and everything from day one. Also the following day, after getting our rooms we were given $400 each so we don’t know where this news is coming from,” Abraham Nkansah conveyed to 3News on the sidelines of the conference.
